What is the difference between Hyperglycemia and Hypo glycemia?
Hyperglycemia occurs when this are excessively high levels of glucose in the blood. The symptoms usually occur when
glood glucose levels go above 15mmol/l. Symptoms of hyperglycemia include:
- extreme thirst
- large volumes and frequent urination
- weakness
- weight loss
If hyperglycemia is not treated, it can lead to the production of ketones, deep breathing, abdominal pain, drowsiness and eventually unconsciousness, coma and death
Hypolgycemia – also called an insulin reation – occurs when blood glucose falls below normal levels – usually less than 4mmol/l. you can treat it by consuming a carb-rich food such as a glucose tablet or juice. It can also be treated with an injection of glucagon if the person is unconscious or unable to swallow. See also symptoms of diabetes and diabetics feeling drunk.
