Risk Groups for Diabetes and Hypoglycemia
Certain people are at higher risk of getting Type 2 diabetes - if you fall into any of the following groups, you should be having annual checks of your blood glucose levels.
This is the only way to find out if you have undiagnosed diabetes.
- Are you over 55
- Do you have a family history of diabetes?
- Are you overweight or obese?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Did you have diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a big baby (more than 9 pounds)?
- Are you southeast Asian, Asian Indian, Afro-American, Hispanic American or Native American
- Have you had polycystic overian syndrome (PCOS)
- Do you have heart disease, angine or have had a heart attack?
- Do you have famiy hypercholestrolaemia (an inherited condition that leads to higher than normal LDL cholesterol and potentially a heart attack later in life

Also look out for warning signs of diabetes. If you are not sure of your health, make an appointment with your doctor for a checkup.
However, the above risk factors - do not account for getting diabetes. Instead - it is our lifestyle - the food we eat and lack of exercise - which lead to Type 2 diabetes. See Risk Factors you can do something about.
